U14 Shield Rd. 1:

Saturday 12th April 2014 at Eire Og.

Kilmaley 2-6; Eire Og 2-4.

A last minute Gary Heslin goal snatched victory from the jaws of defeat for the Kilmaley U14’s in the opening round of the U14 shield competition, and in the process exacted some revenge for this teams defeat by the same opposition in last years U13 shield final. Trailing at half time by 1-2 to 0-0, the local lads displayed huge commitment, determination and skill in the second half to get their campaign off to a winning start. They began the second half with 5 unanswered points 2 coming from Heslin and 3 from the unerring stick of James Fitzpatrick. By this stage the full and half back lines as well as the midfielders were beginning to dominate for the away side and in the process laid the foundation for victory. However with only the minimum between the teams Eire Og fought back with a goal and a point, while Fitzpatrick and Heslin with a point kept Kilmaley in touch as we entered the final few minutes. When Eire Og struck for their fourth and final point, the game looked up for Kilmaley who now trailed by 4 points. However a well taken goal from Aaron Gubbins set up the grandstand finish when Heslin crashed the ball decisively to the net with one of the final pucks of the game. It was a wonderful 17 man effort, with many outstanding individual performances particularly in the second half. Round two of this competition will take place in Kilmaley on Saturday next 19th April against St. Joseph’s Doora/Barefield.
